This covers the aluminum base where the operator holds it, providing insulation between the operators hand and the aluminum.

So why wasn't it included with the router?I am guessing, but here are my observations:

1)A lot of people don't use the router continuously enough to heat the router base so that it is uncomfortable to hold.If you do, you want this cover.I appreciate the cooler grip.

2)It increases the diameter of the base slightly, so folks with small hands might find the router less comfortable with this installed, but I don't.

It took me about a minute to install this on the router (it goes in the base clamp).It does not obstruct the depth gage or the clamp.

If you need this, you will know it, so buy it.If you don't need it, don't worry about it.It is rather like the option of heated seats or a battery heater on a car: if you need it you know it and buy it, but if you live on the Gulf Coast and never venture North in the winter, you don't need to know those options exist; you worry about the air conditioning instead.
